The lodge, Laguna Lodge, is located on the edge of the Tortuguero lagoon with beautiful grounds, screened windows, hot water showers, fans and private baths.
The afternoon options include hiking, fishing, walking the beach to see the turtle hatchlings (seasonal), visiting the village and the Natural History Visitor Center, bird watching, or just relaxing at the pool.
The morning of the second day we tour the small creeks and rivers of the National Park of Tortuguero. This is a two-hour boat tour of wild inland waterways laced with vines, epiphyte plants and a closed forest canopy overhead where uncommon wildlife roam.
Returning to the lodge for breakfast, there is unscheduled time to indulge in any of the activities mentioned above. We depart mid-morning to return down the canal, stopping for a Costa Rican style lunch and arriving in San José by late afternoon.
